Hello, I’m Chiaki, an interpreter.
Recently, I attended Oochamori, a traditional tea ceremony held at
Saidaiji Temple in Nara.
This special event is famous for serving tea in an unusually large tea bowl.
Saidaiji Temple is a historic temple with more than
1,200 years of history.
During the Edo period, alcohol was not allowed in the temple.
Instead, the monks began holding a tea ceremony where visitors could share tea together.
For this ceremony, they used a very large tea bowl so that everyone could enjoy tea in the same spirit.
Even today, this unique event is held only twice a year.
Drinking tea from such a huge tea bowl with the help of my friends was a wonderful and fun experience!
In the Kansai region, there are many places where you can experience traditional Japanese culture and history.
If you have a chance to visit Japan, please come and explore Kansai!
